Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost of psychological services?
My rate is $235 per hour. Therapy is typically about 50 minutes of in-session time, with the remaining 10 minutes used to complete session notes and prepare for your next session. Assessment estimates can be provided upon request, and vary based on the complexity of the referral question. Assessments are billed as services are provided.
I accept credit card and debit e-transfer. You may be able to submit to an employer health plan for reimbursement if your plan covers psychologists. Please check your plan for specific information.
Do I need a referral?
You are welcome to contact me directly, and do not need a referral from a physician to access services.
What is therapy like?
The idea of therapy is intimidating to many people. It is undeniably a strange situation to meet with a new person and tell them deeply personal things. My goal is to create a comfortable environment, where we can explore the issues bringing you to therapy together. Therapy should be a collaborative process, in which you feel emotionally safe to begin to explore more challenging emotions and concerns.
What is the timeline for therapy?
This is a very hard question to answer, because it will be different for everyone. The frequency of sessions may range from once per week to once every few months. Most people begin by meeting more frequently, and then taper over time as they need less support. The overall length of treatment can be short- or long-term, and this will depend on your symptoms, life circumstances, history, and goals for therapy. I will work with you to understand your expectations, provide guidance based on my experience and knowledge, and work collaboratively to find an approach that will work for you.
Do you have a policy related to COVID-19?
I consider myself a COVID-conscious therapist, and want to create an environment that is comfortable and safe. If we meet in person, I will always run an air sterilizer, the office HVAC, and will be monitoring CO2 levels in the room. I am happy to wear a mask - please just ask. If you attend a session wearing a mask, I will always check in to see if you’d like me to wear a mask as well. Masking can make some aspects of therapy a little more challenging (e.g., reading each other’s facial expressions), and a combination of virtual and in-person therapy with masking is often helpful. You will never be charged for cancelling a session due to illness, and I will not attend an in-person session when I am ill.
Does virtual therapy work?
The short answer is yes! Although virtual therapy was not something that was utilized often prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, recent research demonstrates that virtual therapy is as effective as in-person psychotherapy. Virtual therapy also increases accessibility for many individuals. Ultimately, whether virtual or in-person therapy is right for you is often a personal decision, with some people liking a combination of the two. I am open to all of these options.
